Wembley Arena – London - Saturday 12th July Cage Rage 27

American Phil Baroni was headlining the main event at Cage Rage 27, at his new weight class of welterweight. He looked lean and mean for this fight. Coming off a couple of losses, he would be looking to put himself back on track once again. His opponent Scott Jansen was game enough but not really for the seasoned MMA veteran Baroni. Baroni is a dangerous striker at the best of times. But when he came into the cage you could see he had bad intentions in both fists.

They squared off and a few punches tested the water. Baroni set up a nice double leg and put Jansen on his back. It was easy to see that Baroni was in full control on the ground. He progressed his position giving Jansen no chance of escape, until he ended up in side control. Baroni looked to finish the fight with an Americana (shoulder arm lock). Jansen looked in pain but showed his toughness by holding out until he could free up the arm. Baroni took that opportunity to gain the mount position. Strangely at this point the referee stood the fights up. This is normal if the fighters are inactive, but that was not the case at all. Baroni had just gained the position. In the end it would not play a factor. They faced off again and Baroni landed a bone crushing body punch then switched it up to land a big hooking right hand on Jansen's chin. Jansen was out before bouncing off the mat.

Great finish for Baroni. Jansen showed heart, but was not really a match for Baroni. If a fighter puts it on the line and turns up to fight but in the end comes up short, they still can walk away with their head held high and the respect of the fight world. So it was a shame to see what happened after the fight, as it will only take away from Jansen’s performance. As Jansen lay on the mat being checked over, Baroni came over to see if he was okay, as any professional fighter would. As he looked over Jansen a guy next to him in a yellow jumper turned and head butted Baroni! It is believed that this was the brother of Scott Jansen. The attack did no damage to Baroni and he just looked bewildered by what had happened.

Baroni’s angered cornermen Josh Thomson and Mark Coleman chased the attacker, but he disappeared quickly into the crowd. I am told Baroni was very cool about the matter. He decided not to look to press charges, only wanting to move on from the matter. People do build up strong emotions around fighting, but this will do nothing to help image of mixed martial arts in the UK. It is sport fighting not a street fight. Its easy to sucker hit someone, its not tough at all. I am sure Scott Jansen will be the one who suffers over this now.

Heavyweights Neil Grove and Robert "Buzz" Berry went to war in their rematch. Grove worked some very heavy leg kicks to break up Berry’s game of attack. He soon was able to work his hands as Berry was off balance. He put Berry down with a big shot and jumped on him to finish the job. Berry suffered a broken jaw in this fight and has therefore now announced his retirement.
