Knuckledraggers Win Big!

Lancasterian Suite in Newcastle has been home to MMA events for some time now. In fact my own Iron Wolves Fight Team have fought on two shows at this venue. Always a fight friendly crowd giving the fighters maximum respect, it was a business as usual. With Ian "The Machine" Freeman as MC and a fully loaded fight card it was all set for a great night of MMA action. I set out to the event for a busy night as I was acting a correspondent, photographer; corner man and first time fight wear sponsor! Who said that men couldn’t multitask! It was with great honour that I was part of corner for my friend and training partner Pete Irving. A corner that included top fight trainer Barry Norman, MMA Champion Abdul Mohamed, MMA and Thai Boxing Champion Pete Tiarks and the tough as nails Richie Knox.

Pete add already won and successfully defended the Strike and Submit British Championship Belt. Now he was looking to add the European Title to his growing collection. Standing in his way was very dangerous fighter Reza ‘Maddog’ Madadi. Both fighters tough and hungry, this fight at war written all over it. Madadi known for his strong wrestling skills and big swinging punches would be a handful.

Pete looked strong for this fight and has been training his wrestling with the powerhouse wrestler that is Abdul Mohamed. So with that in mind I new Pete had the skills to keep the fight in his control and if he could keep the fight standing he would have a chance to show the striking power that we had been working on. He did just that and really pressed Madadi into a high pace fight. This put Madadi out of his game and allowed Pete to start firing some great Thai kicks to the legs with tight punches. Madadi seemed to be frustrated and started to hold Pete’s shorts at the waist to assist his takedown attempts. Back in the corner Pete just removed his shorts! That was the only way to make sure he didn’t give Madadi an opportunity do it again. Barry quickly sorted out a bloody nose Pete had picked up. Back to action and Madadi had now slowed a bit with Pete looking in charge. Barry’s warm up pad combinations where now paying off at this point, as Pete landed a beautiful punch body kick combo. When the fight when to the ground Pete controlled the half mount and worked his ground and pound. Madadi was hanging tough and still dangerous. In the last round Madadi finally completed a takedown only to be reversed by Pete slick BJJ skills. The last half of the round was Pete controlling the top position and working his ground and pound skills once again.

Great fight! Pete showed that his skills on every level had taken on a new level of ring masterly. Madadi was tough to the end and was a top class opponent. I am sure if Pete had given him any opportunity he would have had a lot of trouble. It was Pete’s strong game plan and all round skill that brought home another belt to the Knuckledraggers. That night the Knuckledraggers had more success with Matt Inman defending his Strike & Submit Semi Pro British Welterweight Title and Yves Ausset also winning his fight in 46 seconds! All in all, a good nights work.

I was very impressed with the fights at this show. The standard of skills and conditioning was high across the broad. The fighting spirit is very strong in the north and I am sure it will only grow.

Lastly it was great for Duane Harper and me to see our new 10th Legion Fight Wear in the cage for the first time.
