The last months have been full of big fights from the UFC and it looks like we are in store for much more in the next coming months. With all the great fights we can really say MMA is booming.

UFC 100

Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping

This fight had become somewhat of a grudge match due to the banter between Bisping and Henderson becoming stronger since the time they spent as coaches on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ show. Henderson would be a big test for Bisping on this rise in the ranks. On the other side of the coin if would be interesting to see where Henderson was at this point in his career. One thing was for sure the Bisping had got under Henderson’s skin, which may or may not have been a good idea!

Round 1

This first round didn’t go well for Bisping. His hot and run style was not working well against Henderson’s come forward grinding style. Henderson is known for his strong chin and seemed unfazed by Bisping’s jabs. Henderson landed a hurtful attack on Bisping. At one point Bisping surprised the crowd with a takedown attempt, which never had a chance of success. Henderson marched on like a man on a mission.

Henderson.

Round 2

Henderson came out looking for Bisping guns blazing. Bisping looked uncomfortable and retreated from Henderson’s pressure. Bisping circled into a solid right hook of Henderson, which putted Bisping out cold. Bisping was out as he landed on the canvas. Henderson quickly followed up with a leap into the air which landing a   forearm in the face of Bisping. The referee jumped in to stop the fight at 3.20 of the second round. Bisping was out cold for a few minutes before he came back around. He looked upset at his first knockout lost. A hard lost for Bisping, as this was his first taste at being in with the top of the pack. I am sure he will regroup and be back on track very soon. Good win off Henderson, sends out the message that he is still at the top of his game.

Winner: Henderson

Georges St Pierre vs. Thiago Alves

This was the fight I was looking forward to seeing as many other fight fans. On paper Thiago would be the biggest test for GSP. Thiago has great stand up skills and is a very tough guy. He has been climbing his way to this title shot and looked very hungry indeed. GSP is the man of the moment. He has shown that he is the real deal in every area for MMA. GSP has out wrestled top wrestlers, he has out BJJ top BBJ champs, now it was time to see if he would out strike the excellent striking of Thiago Alves! This fight was 5 rounds of a GSP master class in MMA excellence!  GSP won each round by out striking Thiago and setting up perfect takedowns every time. Add a touch of ground and pound each time and you have a step-by-step guide to kicking butt in the octagon. Thiago is a skilled and dangerous fighter, but he just could not get his game going, as GSP was on another level in this fight.

Winner: Georges St Pierre

Finding more opponents for GSP will be the next task for the UFC as he is currently a man on fire! On another note Greg Jackson cornering was as always in a class of his own.

Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir

Was Mir’s first win over Lesnar a one off? Or was Mir ready to do it again? It was time to see this questions answered. Lesnar was looking for payback and he wanted it bad. Round 1 Lesnar put Mir down and Mir looked for a knee bar and another early night, but this was not the same Lesnar as last time. The now savvy Lesnar pressured Mir and pinned him down from top body control. Mir still had half guard, but this just seemed to help Lesnar lock him down with a neck crank control position. Lesnar in a prime position to put the hurt on Mir who was helpless to move.

Lesnar.

Round 2

Mir showed a lot of heart in the second round as he came out banging landing some good knees. But Lesnar is a run away train and scored the takedown. That was the start of the end for Mir as Lesnar smashed home his big win.

Winner: Lesnar Brock has proved once again that he is a man on a mission.

UFC 101

Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin

An interesting match up! Forrest is a come forward throwdown type of fighter. But would that be enough for the striking Zen Master, which is Anderson Silva.

Round 1

Forrest looked to jab and one two-leg kick combo. Silva looked to play the distance and checkout his opponent. Silva caught Griffin’s low kick and walked him over.
Silva looked to be gaining his control of timing and turned up his pressure on Griffin.
He knocked Griffin down and then requested him to stand again. This time Silva showed he has Griffin’s number and even with his hands down out moved and out countered Griffin. Silva put Griffin down again and this time the fight was over. At 3.23 of the first round.

Silva looked amazing and proved once again why he is the Champ. Griffin was disappointed with his performance as he left the octagon straight away with no comment on the fight. He is a fighter with a lot of heart and to lose with not much of a fight would have hurt him more that the knockout for sure.

B.J Penn vs. Kenny Florian

This match up was very exciting. Penn had lost to GSP in his last fight at welterweight, but now he was back at his more natural fighting weight, to defend his lightweight UFC Championship belt. Florian worked very hard to get this fight and had done a great job to get to this point. But PJ Penn showed why he is the Lightweight Champ winning each round until he sunk in a rear-naked choke at 3:54 of the fourth round to finish the fight A good fight for Penn as Florian was at the top of his game for this fight.

Winner: BJ Penn

UFC 102 - Couture vs. Nogueira Ultimate Fighting Championship

Coming up next will be UFC 102 Couture vs. Nogueira another big night of MMA! What A great fight card that will be! Couture vs. Nogueira is the fight the fans have wanted for some time and looks set to be a real battle of styles. Keith Jardine will have his work cut out with Thiago Silva. If he wins that fight he may get that title fight he has been waiting forever for. Chris Leben is back in the mix, which should be exciting to watch. Nate Marquardt vs, Demian Maia will be the fight to watch. A big test for the unbeaten Maia as Marquardt is a very strong opponent. Brandon Vera vs. Krzysztof Soszynski will be another fight that will allow one of the guys to step up a level.  Vera is rebuilding his path to the top and Soszynski has been making big waves of late. Gabriel Gonzaga, Ed Herman, Marcus Aurelio all looking to get back on form. Lots of fighters with reasons to need some good wins under their belts. Tension will be high for this card!
